CONTACT A DEBT COUNSELLOR NOW!

Is debt counselling working for you?

The Debt Counselling Institute is concerned with the unprecedented increase in unsecured credit by the Credit Providers. We predict that numbers of ordinary South Africans visiting Debt Counsellors in May - August 2012 will increase dramatically. The realities of the New Year are settling in. Although the New Year has started without any major economic crises… last years “Usual Suspects” remain. For the man in the street, January is not a good month especially  for those in debt. According to reports in the press last week, food inflation is at 14%, energy prices will continue to rise in 2012 and then there is the Festive Period debt and school fees. Do you want more information on DEBT COUNSELLING? Contact us now and we will get a reputable Debt Counsellor to contact you immediately…

It is not always possible to find the right, and immediate, help for those who cannot pay their debts. No person should have to fight with their creditors as well as their debt counsellor! We are committed to helping the debt counselling industry.

Debt Counselling is now over 4 years old.  This is very good news for all. For those Debt Counsellors who have put in the hours sorting out the problems of the overindebted, …well done!  The effort has been worth it!  Assistance and expert advice is at hand. Certificates are being issued daily confirming that the overindebted have successfully put their debts behind them.  This is a personal victory for those who have paid back their debts in terms of their payment plan.

The Debt Counselling Institute was formed to help those seeking to make debt counselling work.  There are many parties involved in the debt counselling process, but due to the complexity of each matter, success is not always guarenteed.  Finding someone who can take your matter on and find solutions to your unique financial situation is paramount to having your matter resolved successfully by the court. Everyone wants to go and see the right person when the crisis hits.

Our philosophy is that debt counselling / debt review is a legal process.  From taking instruction until the last payment of the accounts is made and a certificate that the matter has been finalised through the process has been issued, is a legal process. Our advice is for you to find a debt counsellor who is able to provide guidance both to debt review and to court matters.

The good news is that the debt counselling industry is maturing. Many of those debt counsellors entering the industry simply to make a quick profit have found the debt counselling industry hard going.  To be a successful debt counsellor one needs to have many qualities.  Here is a list of the 10 qualities required to be successful at debt counselling:

  1. be a successful entrepreneur.  For those entering the profession, there was no handbook on how to run a successful DC business.  Mostly it was trial and error. We all made mistakes as we got going.  For the successful DCs, the mistakes helped cement their place in this pioneering industry.
  2. be a good manager. If a person was not a good manager, he would be a lousy debt counsellor.  The DC would be required to manage the resources of the business and show that he/ she appreciated controls and new how to manage them.
  3. be an empathetic listerner.  Most DC have to deal with stressed individuals who are in crisis. To be a successful DC one has to be able to give empathetic guidance to people in their time of need.
  4. understand the law.  DC are required to have legal and negotiation skills.  For every matter that is in the debt counselling process, there are a myriad of legal issues that arise.
  5. be a good administrator. A good administrator knows how to set up systems and manage things through the systems. A debt counsellor is required to understand what needs to be done to provide dc solutions and then to set up systems to manage matters through the process.
  6. be a tec guru.  With the starting a dc business, one has to be able to keep computer systems working, networking, working with PDAs.  Many DC have been undone by a simple virus attach of their computing system which makes their computer close down and become the foe and not the friend.
  7. be a brilliant marketer.   For us that started so long ago, we opened offices and expected the work to flood in. The reality was that we needed to go out and market our service through pamphlets, websites, ads etc. There has been no easy way for the debt counsellors to grow their client base without rolling up the sleaves and starting to market.
  8. be a marriage counsellor.  Many of us have realised that with debt comes marriage problems. Often we find ourselves deeply in a dispute between the spouses who are trying to make a budget balance when there are lots of needs for those who need to be catered for.
  9. have a head for figures.  As DCs are working with budgets, it is important that they understand how household expenses work and what it will take to put a plan together that will be workable for the household that wants assistance.
  10. be a good negotiator. Often DCs find themselves in a “David and Goliath” situation.  They have to take on the major banks to find a solution to their clients financial position.  The creditors have more resources for every negotiation.

But  the good news is that we all survive. We are committed to MAKE DEBT COUNSELLING WORK! Go to our contact page for assistance with debt counselling.
